Future-proof your electricity meters with Edition 2 certification!

Future-proof certification of your electricity meters with Edition 2 standards!

Why Edition 2 matters

IEC TC13 has published the 62052-11 / 62053 Edition 2 series of standards for electricity meters already some years ago. These standards introduces critical updates for manufacturers of electricity meters. Understanding these changes is crucial to ensuring compliance, improving safety, and maintaining a competitive edge.

NMi is here to help you navigate these updates and their implications.

Key updates in Edition 2:

What does this mean for you?

The transition to Edition 2 has a significant impact. Not only the IEC family of standards are updated, but it has also an impact on the European standards. EN 50470-1 and EN 50470-3 (Edition 1), currently being harmonized under the MID for active energy meters, will be replaced by Edition 2. Additionally, DC meters—which were not previously covered under MID—will now be included while using the new EN 50470-4 as a harmonized standard, ensuring alignment with evolving market and regulatory requirements.

These updates aim to make electricity meters safer and more versatile, but they also pose challenges for manufacturers, including:

  • Design Adjustments: Manufacturers must reassess their designs to meet new requirements and extended test conditions.
  • Safety aspects: Due to the enforced safety standard 62052-31 safety requirements play a much more stringent role.

While Edition 1 certification remains available as a certification option as long as the Edition 2 versions are not officially harmonized with the MID yet, Edition 2 is the smarter, future-proof choice, ensuring compliance with the latest versions of internationally accepted standards. Additionally, mandatory safety testing now requires businesses to upgrade their meters to meet the new standards. By certifying under Edition 2 today, you can stay ahead of industry shifts.
