NMi Participates in OIML-CS Committee Meeting in Prague
04 April 2025
Marc Schmidt, NMi’s Director of Technical, Quality, and Risk (TQR) and Chair of the OIML-CS Management Committee, recently joined global legal metrology leaders in Prague for a strategic meeting focused on advancing the international alignment and adoption of legal metrology systems.
As part of the OIML-CS Management Committee, Marc participated in critical discussions to strengthen the global framework for certification of regulated measuring instruments—particularly those used in trade, safety, and public health.
Key Meeting Topics
Expanding Global Engagement with the OIML-CS
A major focus of the meeting was understanding how to encourage more countries to become official utilisers of the OIML Certification System (OIML-CS). While OIML has over 130 member states, only 38 are currently formal utilisers of the system. Committee members exchanged ideas on better communicating the value of the OIML-CS and removing barriers to broader adoption.
This is a significant development for businesses involved in manufacturing regulated measuring instruments—such as weighing devices, meters, and fuel dispensers. Broader uptake of the OIML-CS would help simplify international market access, reduce duplicate certification efforts, and improve consistency in compliance requirements across jurisdictions.
Updates on Issuing Authorities and Standards Alignment
The meeting also covered recent changes among OIML issuing authorities and updates from ILAC and ISO/CASCO, the international bodies responsible for laboratory accreditation and standardization. These developments are relevant for manufacturers working with notified bodies and testing labs, as they may affect recognition of certifications across regions and how testing requirements are applied.
Technical Amendments to the MID and Global Collaboration
Marc and the committee were updated on the status of the Targeted Technical Amendment of the EU’s Measuring Instruments Directive (MID). Although the MID is European legislation, there was strong interest and support from non-European countries, who see value in aligning with the structured and transparent approach it offers.
For manufacturers, this reinforces the growing relevance of MID certification—even outside the EU—as more markets look to adopt or align with established regulatory frameworks for measuring instruments.
What This Means for Industry
NMi’s involvement in these international conversations reflects its role as a certification body and an active contributor to the development of globally recognised legal metrology systems.
For businesses, the outcomes of these discussions support:
- Greater international recognition of certified instruments.
- Improved consistency in how certification requirements are interpreted and applied.
- Clearer pathways to market for products that meet OIML or MID standards.
As markets evolve and regulations tighten, early engagement with these frameworks—supported by a partner like NMi—helps businesses navigate complexity confidently and ensure long-term compliance.
