Checking the Reference at Racetracks

Checking the Reference at Racetracks

9 November 2022

NMi regularly visits racetracks. Race circuits consist of different sections where not only vehicles but also speed measuring devices can be tested. Our mobility team tests the maximum speed for the type approval of speed measuring devices like  trajectory control systems, radars, and loop detection systems.

These circuits have a gantry structure installed and detection loops have been cut into the asphalt at a known distance from each other. As soon as a vehicle passes, it is detected, and the time to detection of the according loop is measured. By dividing this time by the intermediate distance, the speed of the vehicle can be determined. Thereby, the intermediate distance is a reference for the measured speed. NMi measures the spacing of these detection loops.
